People with disabilities can succeed and contribute to the world’s economy

I believe that people with disabilities have the potential to succeed in life and to contribute to the world’s economy. If they are educated, people with disabilities can do the job as well as, if not better than, their non-disabled counterparts. Similarly, if they are empowered, people with disabilities can run businesses just like any other businessperson. However, there are many people with disabilities who fail to access education and empowerment opportunities due stigma to and social exclusion.

Many people with disabilities live in communities where they viewed as objects of pity and perpetual recipients of charity. Where the belief is that their work is by street corners. This kind of thinking has seen people with disabilities being left out of educational and empowerment opportunities at community level. Yet, these opportunities are supposed to empower the whole community. Aren’t people with disabilities part of the community?

People with disabilities can thrive if they are given access to educational and empowerment opportunities at community level. For this reason, Endless Possibilities runs empowerment programs for students with disabilities in tertiary institutions. Some of these students have gone on to start their own businesses. Right now, we are working towards helping people with disabilities in Dzivarasekwa, a high-density suburb of Harare, to start small projects for their self-sustenance, building upon the skills that they already have. Some of them are good at poultry, sewing, gardening and shoe making. We intend to support them by offering them training on how to run a business, linking them to the right markets and providing capital for their projects.
